The daughter of the architect, Henry Searle, Helen was born in Burlington, Vermont and grew up in New York State. From 1867-1871, she studied in Germany with the reknowned still life painter J.W.Preyer who was associated with the Dusseldorf School of painting. She exhibited in Dusseldorf to great praise in the press, returned to the states in 1872, establishing a studio in Washington, D.C. Her still lifes are in several museum collections including the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Worcester Art Museum.
