Frederick Frieseke was an American Impressionist painter, primarily known for his involvement in the Giverny art colony of American artists working in France. Born in Michigan, upon graduating high school he studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Arts Students League in New York. After a stint working as an illustrator, he moved to Paris in 1898. Here he continued his art education under, most notably, James Whistler.
Working independently in Paris and Normandy, Frieseke made works inspired by the Impressionists that preceded him, infused with a decorative aspect inspired by Les Nabis painters. He was especially prolific in painting vivid outdoor scenes, often featuring a female nude or figure.
